One of boxing’s premiere middleweights returned to the ring for the first time in 2021, as Jermall Charlo successfully defended the WBC middleweight title against Juan Macias Montiel at the Toyota Center in Charlo’s hometown of Houston on Saturday night.

Charlo came back after his most impressive performance at 160 pounds in September, when he defeated former title challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko via unanimous decision. Tonight, the champion took on 4th ranked contender Juan Montiel in what most boxing “experts” predicted would be nothing more than a tune-up fight. Once again, the “experts” were proven wrong, as Montiel showed the heart of a champion and took the undefeated champion to the distance. Tonight was the first time that the champion was cut during competition.

After the fight the champion was so impressed with the determination of his challenger, that he presented Montiel with a medal of appreciation, and called him “a warrior”.

Charlo then turned his attention to the bigger fish in the boxing ocean, as went on to call out Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin. We’ll see what happens with the challenge that the champ has laid out for the other competitors. We will also continue to monitor Mr. Montiel’s career and where it goes from here. I had the honor of meeting him after his gutsy performance tonight, and look forward to covering his fights in the future. #BTPSports
